In
our perception, this project really attended the needs of this group
of peer educators. We confirmed that, at the beginning of the project,
almost all of them were acting as peer educators without a good
preparation for the activities they were doing. For example, adolescents
from a group whose mission is to decrease gender imbalance and inequity
they were not aware about the real meaning of gender and how to
work to facilitate the empowerment of women. Other group working
in the prevention of STD and Aids had failures on how to teach to
use the condom. Other working with violence was not prepared to
work with empowerment. Most of them had misinformation about contraceptive
methods and they definitively never received preparation for using
participatory educational methodology, management of groups, how
to make decisions, how to increase self esteem, or how to facilitate
the construction of a healthy project of life.
One
of the important factors that we would like to highlight is the
participation of men and women from the homosexual movements. They
taught us a lot about discrimination, the difficulties they have
even for receiving materials and information for protection, especially
for lesbian women.
We consider that we achieved the proposed objective and we expect
that the results will be greater and with larger impact if we can
continue giving support in 2007.
